about the project
"the emotion machine" is a hybrid interface created during my first year of study at the wdka. the assignment involved creating an interface of our choosing, through which a certain user group (in our case, student expats) and a database (in our case, openimages.nl) were to be connected.
after extensive research, stefan and i decided to create an installation-like interface which would tap into student expats' varied and oftentimes confusing emotions. as the first person in my family who immigrated for their studies, i felt overwhelmingly bittersweet: on one hand, happy to do what i love and excited to be faced with new experiences, and on the other alone and homesick. with this in mind, creating a feeling-based interface to comfort and empathize with fellow students was a no-brainer.
the interface involved a website which would prompt the user to hold one of six spherical objects - each one referring to one of the six core human emotions - to the webcam. the user would be encouraged to pick the object intuitively. machine learning was used in order to train the webcam to recognize each of the objects. the user would then be led to the respective page of the chosen emotion object, where videos from the openimages.nl database would be shown. the videos related to the chosen emotion and were entirely curated by me.
within this project, i contributed with the creation of the six spherical objects, the metal stands on which they were presented, curating and editing the videos from the database, as well as designing promotional postcards and stickers for our project. moreover, an individual process website was mandatory; if you'd like to see more about the project and be walked through the entire creation process, click here!
