about the project

during the second year of studies at the wdka, we were introduced to the concept of autonomous networks. for an assignment, we had to develop our own network, with three main components: messaging, storage and publishing.

my teammate and i created "syncspot", a network centered around user input. the proposed concept involved an usb stick which would be planted by us in a public location within the city. the usb would get passed around from person to person until a set end date (the project having a duration of a month), when it would be returned back to us. the users would leave content relating to the monthly theme, as well as their contact details. at the end of the month, we would create a digital publication of all the user input we received, which would be returned to the contributors.

the first issue of “syncspot”, which explored carl jung’s theory of synchronicity, was entirely designed by me. i went for an early computer, 2000's inspired theme, with intentionally pixelated titles and background elements and a monospace typeface for the body text. the act of passing the usb was reminiscent of a pre-internet era where information was stored and distributed exclusively through physical drives. i was loosely inspired by the windows 98 operating system as well, which infamously featured a vibrant turquoise as its default background.
