about the project
“loose fragments” is a publication made during the second year of study at the wdka in rotterdam. the assignment was to create a book from scratch, loosely relating to “society of the spectacle” by guy debord. i chose to illustrate the relationship between physical places and memories (a process called contextual binding), crafting a publication in a scrapbook style, reflecting on my own memories in special places within rotterdam. the publication features self-written, poem-style text and photographs i shot myself.
i used various analog techniques to create texture and give the book an even more personal feel: paper weaving (featured on the covers and chapter introduction pages), collaging and block stamping, digitizing paper rips and cut-outs, etc. the binding was done with rings, as a nod to the spiral-bound notebooks i’d use as journals throughout my life.
besides the publications themselves, everyone had to contribute towards setting up a book fair, for which a motion poster of each individual book was required. my poster (click the text to be redirected) plays into the grid system of the publication, digitizing and animating the featured woven collages.
the foreword, featured below, explains the premise of the publication in better detail.
your favorite park, the bus station where you shared a goodbye kiss, the bar you got tipsy at on your first birthday alone - places bursting with nostalgia, triggering a flood of special memories.
giving an emotional context a spatial dimension leads to more vivid memories, as the brain associates the two - a process which is called contextual binding. multi-layered recollections of events, now grounded in a certain physical space, become moments of sweet reminiscence.
“loose fragments” explores some of my favorite places in rotterdam, homes to precious memories from the past year. each chapter is an ode to a certain place, visually highlighting its physical qualities and, through short poems, its personal emotional value.
