about the project
collaging is a technique i’d always wanted to dabble in and improve at. intricate and therapeutic, the resulting compositions would always fascinate me.
within my study at the wdka, we would be encouraged to engage in self-initiated projects twice a year - a timespan called the "plus-weeks". given the opportunity, i started experimenting with abstract collaging.
i gathered various materials from the city, from free flyers, brochures and junk mail advertisements to vintage magazines and thrifted books. i wanted to work intuitively and without much preparation, so i let my hands and heart do the work for me: i would combine whichever images and text fragments i was drawn to into a final piece. i experimented with combining analog and digital methods, for example by warping and digitally overlaying scans of found text.
the resulting prints vary in size and theme, most of them becoming color studies; i made it a challenge to match the colors of the cut-outs used in order to create a cohesive and enticing result.
moreover, i was given the opportunity to be a vendor at the wdka open days in february 2023, wherein a graphic designers' market was organized by tutors and students. this was my first contact with vending art prints and was an useful and fulfilling experience.
